In June 5, 1942 People's Commissar for heavy engineering N.S.Kazakov signed an order to construct heavy machine-building plant in Orsk, Orenburg region. The plant was meant for metal products manufacture and was founded on the basis of equipment and qualified staff evacuated from enterprises of European part of the country. In no time the plant was set to operation. By December 1942 first bays of No.3 shop were set into operation. On demand of oil-industry enterprises the shop manufactured components for drilling machines, as well as parts for farm machinery and in a year the plant started steelmaking and hot-metal production.
On March 7, 1945 the enterprise was renamed into south Ural machine-building plant - UZHURALMASH (UYMZ).
After the war new production shops (machine shop, tool shop, open-hearth shop, steel-casting foundry, coking equipment shop) were built and commissioned. That created a greater variety of manufactured products, increased machine and mechanism production volume. Developing metal industry was in demand of UYMZ equipment.
In 1952 the plant manufactured first tower-type car dumpers for Zaporozhstal and Chelyabinsk metallurgical works.
In 1958 UYMZ delivered first domestic sheet bar-and-billet mill 730/500 to Krivoy Rog metallurgical works. Same year at the All-Union sectoral conference a decision was made authorizing UZHURALMASH to be the main supplier of continuous billet mills in the country.
In 1960-ies UZHURALMASH ranged among the largest producers of metallurgical equipmemt. Thus, for example, in 1964-1965 the plant manufactured continuous billet mills 900/700/500 for Krivoy Rog and Chelyabinsk metallurgical works. By capacity and rate the mills were the best for that period. The mill project won gold, silver and three bronze medals at USSR National Economy Achievement Exhibition. On repeated occasions the plant personnel went after prizes in competitions between related enterprises of the industry.
In 1966 the plant was decorated with the Order of Red Banner of Labour for steady and high-quality execution of state orders and contractual deliveries in due time.
In 1970 State Commission for attestation of machine-building industry output awarded five YUMZ machine brands with State Certification mark.
In 1971 nine and then thirteen Uzhuralmash articles got the highest quality assessment for performance. It proved reliability of the plant and promoted further expansion of business contacts.
In 1980-ies Uzhuralmash increased scope of design and research works for continuous casting machines (CCM). CCM complex was designed for Oskolsky Electrometallurgical works shall be specially mentioned. The complex output rate is 2,4 mln tons of billets per year.
It is hardly possible to find fairly large Russian metallurgical works with no YUMZ equipment operating there.
Plant export volume has also increased. By the end of 1970-ies UYMZ trademark was well known in more than 30 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. In 1980 the plant was awarded with international prize Gold Mercury for production development and international cooperation.
Plants reputation as a reliable partner of international metallurgical works has also been proved by "The Arch of Europe, Gold Star Award". The prize was awarded in March 1992 for "immense contribution to business community and high performance".
On September 10, 1992 personnel conference made a decision to convert Uzhuralmash into joint-stock company. On February 5, 1993 industrial complex privatization was complete and Uzhuralmash closed joint-stock company was registered in Orsk administration.
In April 1997 Petrolenburg investment house bought control stock of Uzhuralmash joint-stock company. The Shevtzov brothers became beneficial owners of the plant.
The owner crew carried out enterprise restructurization with production sites segragation and reorganization of financial management structure.
In 1998 budjeting system was introduced in the plant to increase finance controllability of Uzhuralmash Joint-stock company.
In 2000 new trademark ORMETO-UYMZ was introduced and the enterprise was renamed for Machine-building concern ORMETO-UYMZ under marketing policy.
The same year ladle furnace and "chamber vacuum vessel" system was put into operation in the course of steel-casting site reconstruction. This improved production quality in compliance with international standards. The project backing was at concern own expense and on account of 83,7 mln rubles budgetary funds allocated by Orenburg region administration on a remuneration basis. In August 2002 the concern called in a credit in time and in full extent. Practically immediately the plant was given another credit of 42 mln rubles for press reconstruction in forging workshop.
In 2002 concern unique loading-and cargo handling equipment designed for bulk material storehouses (ORMETO-UYMZ has been the only manufacturer of the equipmemt in Russia) entered new markets and was in great demand by fuel-energy complex, coal industry enterprises, sea and river port terminals.
At present ORMETO-YUMZ is an industrial complex featuring complete production cycle: from smelting of hot metal to final products.
This complex consists of 25 workshops of primary and auxiliary production. ORMETO-YUMZ has its own engineering center, steelmaking site, casting, forging and pressing shop, welding and machine-assembly production, tool shop, and roll production.
The following laboratories form the company's testing base: metallophysical laboratory, X-ray spectrum analysis laboratory, metallographical, chemical and mechanical laboratories. Also hard alloy plasma spraying is being introduced.
ORMETO-YUMZ chief engineers are in charge of final assembly, starting-up and adjustment works at customers site.
